Czech Currency

 

  • the Czech currency is called "koruna" (crown, abbreviated Kč)

  • coins  of these denominations are in circulation: 1 crown, 2 crowns, 5 crowns, 10 crowns, 20 crowns, 50 crowns

  • notes in circulation: 100 crowns, 200 crowns, 500 crowns, 1 OOO crowns, 2 000 crowns, 5 000 crowns

 

 

 

Money matters

 

  • The cost of living in the Czech Republic is much lower than in the old EU member states and you will be able to live comfortably without spending large sums.

  • Bank machines are generally the easiest and cheapest way to manage money here, and the Brno city centre features numerous conveniently located bank machines.

  • Foreign currency can be exchanged at any bank, though you might check around which one gives the best rate, since these can vary a little. The small exchange booths in the centre of Brno and Masarykova Street are said to offer good exchange rates.

  • For basic expenses such as food, accommodation and transportation, students will need EUR 250 - 300 per month.

 

  • Prices of some foods and goods (approximate) in Czech crowns (EUR)

    • A loaf of bread :  25 CZK (EUR 0,9)

    • milk (1l):  17 CZK (EUR 0,6)

    • yogurt:   14 CZK  (EUR 0,5)

    • beer (0.5l): 30 - 40 CZK (EUR 1,2-1,5)

    • bottle of wine: 90 - 150 CZK (EUR 3 - 5,7)

    • daily lunch menu: 100 - 120 CZK (EUR 3,8 - 4,6)

    • cinema ticket:  175 - 220 CZK  (EUR 6,7-8,5)

    • theatre: 300 - 500 CZK (EUR 11,5 - 19,2)

    • bowling: 280 - 300 CZK (EUR 10,8 -11,5)
